DT Special Assignment Day!

Today, Design Team member Cherie Nymeyer has a fantastic article on sketch usage for you.

Scrapbook sketches are so much fun and such an invaluable resource for creativity. What’s so fantastic about them is they can serve as a jumping off point for a layout, or the complete inspiration for your completed project. One thing you will notice is that no two layouts based on the same sketch will end up looking the same! Take a look at the sketch our Design Team worked with and all the fantastic and original designs we ended up with on the Scrapping Turtle Blog:

Sometimes all we need is a jumping off point for a layout; something to get the creative juices flowing. I took this great sketch by sketch designer Becky Fleck care of Scrapbook & Cards Today and created a layout about my son’s first birthday. To make the design a little different, I flipped the photos and journaling block to opposite sides.

Other times, you can take a sketch quite literally and copy the elements exactly. For this layout from Inspired Blueprints, I copied everything on the layout exactly and was quite pleased with the result.

I think people sometimes think using a sketch is cheating a little bit; that if they didn’t create their page all by themselves, they can’t take credit for the work. I don’t think this is true. We all borrow ideas from eachother, otherwise we wouldn’t share our work online and in magazines. There are so many sketch sites out there for a reason and they’re just waiting for you to join in!

Here are a few to check out:
